Advance Your Public Health Career: The Ultimate Guide to DrPH Programs

Published on: Jun 23, 2024

As public health professionals or prospective professionals, we’re all aware of the growing need for experts in the field in the United States.  In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupations in the health industry are projected to grow rapidly in the next decade.

In addition, as the COVID-19 pandemic revealed, there is a dire need for advanced expertise in the public health field.  Whether for emergency preparedness or health education jobs, the need for public health professionals has grown in recent years and will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

While considering advanced education in public health, there are dozens of avenues to consider to help you reach your career goals. As we’ve addressed in other articles, the Master of Public Health degree is an interdisciplinary professional degree option that can turn you into a public health professional prepared to change the industry in a matter of a couple of years.

For those who are interested in generating new knowledge in the field, a PhD in public health will prepare students to conduct research.  This degree will take, on average, five years to complete, but recipients are prepared to work in academia to advance the field.

For those interested in combining the two degrees, there’s a third option: the Doctorate of Public Health, or DrPH. While the DrPH prepares students for academic research, it also emphasizes applied practice.

In this article, we’ll explore a handful of online, in-person and hybrid DrPH programs to give an idea of the opportunities available for aspiring students.

Why Pursue a DrPH?:

There are numerous benefits to pursuing a DrPH degree, especially if you are a public health professional who thrives in applied practice.  Unlike the PhD, DrPH programs provide students with a cutting-edge technical background while developing leadership and management skills.  While a PhD focuses more on research and academia, the DrPH is designed to produce future leaders in the applied practice of public health.

Regardless of which degree you decide to pursue, at the end of your 3-6 years of study, you will enjoy the distinction of the “Doctor” title!

Researching DrPH Programs:

Just like researching any other graduate degree, deciding which programs to apply to can be an overwhelming process.  To help streamline the process, there are a few main components you should consider while narrowing down your program choices:

  • Accreditation:

Any program you apply to should be accredited by an appropriate governing body.  In the public health field, the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) determines which programs meet accreditation standards.  Starting with their list of programs is an excellent first step.

  • Curriculum:

What topic do you want to study?  Will you be able to apply past graduate coursework towards completion of your doctoral degree?  Determining if the school offers courses that will help you reach your professional goals is key when deciding on a program.

  • Faculty:

The benefit of advanced study is also getting to work closely with faculty who are already experts in the field.  Read faculty bios and familiarize yourself with the work of 2-3 professors while researching programs.  If you could see yourself learning from these professors or even working with them while studying, that program is probably worth your consideration.

  • Alumni outcomes:

Understanding where alumni land after completing their degree should also be a determining factor in choosing where to apply.  After all, you’re entering this field of study and this particular program to become a leader in the field, so knowing if you’ll be prepared for that dream role after graduation is crucial.  As an exercise, consider the following:

    1. Research your dream job.  Maybe that’s as the head of the CDC or the President of a large non-profit.  Find the person currently in that role and read their resume.  What do you notice?

    2. Consider whether this degree, with its coursework, research and applied practice experience, could eventually position you to be in a similar role.

  • Geography:

This is going last in the list because it shouldn’t be the deciding factor, but it is worth considering.  A DrPH is a significant time commitment, lasting about five years on average. The average doctoral student receives their degree in their early 30s, meaning that a large chunk of your 20s could be spent wherever the university is.  Consider if that potential relocation would be feasible for your life.

  • Evaluating Program Formats:

Discuss the pros and cons of traditional classroom settings versus hybrid/online learning environments, helping readers understand which format may best suit their lifestyle and learning preferences.

While geography is an important consideration, methods of study have also diversified in recent years, giving students more flexibility on where they complete their degree.  Several programs throughout the country offer either hybrid or entirely online programs.  Some programs can also be completed part-time, allowing students to work in the field while studying.

Deciding if a hybrid or online program is for you is ultimately a personal decision.  While it might be necessary to also work at the same time and make at DrPH program financially feasible, there can be drawbacks to completing such an advanced degree in a non-traditional format.  For instance:

Less in-person time with faculty and mentors

If working closely with mentors is important to you, you may find that an online or hybrid program detracts from this element of graduate school, simply because of program logistics.  As we’ve all felt in recent years, Zooming into classes or work meetings can be tiring, especially when you’re looking at spending several years completing a rigorous program.

Fewer networking opportunities with fellow students.

Part of the draw of graduate school is establishing connections and relationships with people in your community and field.  If half or almost all of your academic time is spent online, it can feel challenging to establish those connections.

At the same time, hybrid or online programs offer unprecedented flexibility that allows you to fit school into your life.  For example:

Geographic flexibility

With the advent of online learning, you can essentially attend school anywhere.  This is especially helpful if you already have roots in a state or city where the university isn’t located.

Financial freedom

Traditional school programs, especially at the doctoral level, are a huge time commitment and while students generally receive a stipend for tuition, the time constraints of study make it almost impossible to fit in a full-time or even part-time job to allow you to support yourself.  Online or hybrid programs help address some of that concern, giving students more options to fit learning into their lives.

Ultimately, deciding what mode of study is right for you is a personal choice, but it’s important to be honest with yourself about your learning styles and what sets you up for academic success.  If you’re an individual who needs to learn in a distraction-free environment or be held accountable to studying by an in-person schedule, perhaps the traditional in-person schedule is a better fit for you.

However, if you think you would be self-motivated to study independently and have no problem retaining material while learning in online classrooms, consider looking into some non-traditional study options.
